Today, I’ll share a broad scent overview of Le Lion, macro and micro olfactory descriptions, and scent comparisons to other fragrances.
The opening is bright, sharp, and lemony but that was a fleeting moment, swiftly subsumed by smoke and leather. Chanel listed the notes as “a rich amber accord” with “bold notes of bergamot, lemon, patchouli, and sandalwood.”
Overall, Le Lion de Chanel is a subtle and complex leather scent, refined, beautifully nuanced, rather unexpected and very versatile: it can be worn with anything from casual countryside tweeds to big city tuxedos, as long as the person wearing it has got enough panache to do so. Stereotypically it should probably be considered a masculine .
Le Lion is refreshing and clear in the top notes, but quickly it shifts, revealing the wonderful waves of warm resins that make for a distinct signature. Speaking of resins, Le Lion gives me a ton of oily, rich and unctuous resins, namely labdanum, incense and benzoin. Le Lion is borderline off-limits Chanel signature – there is an undeniable animalic-amber element to it that simply isn’t Chanel-like – but as a paradox of sorts the masterful resin-sandalwood accord feels so utterly Chanel after the dry down.
